HISTORY Oates Garage has been a family-oriented business since it was established as a filling station by Syd Oates on the current site in Willington in 1939. His son Terry, who retired in May 2001, has been in the motor trade since 1952, having served his time as a motor vehicle technician. After serving as an army volunteer Terry persuaded his father to take on a new car franchise. Terry met his wife Barbara in 1966 and she joined the business just before it grew rapidly in the late-1960s and early 1970s. A Datsun franchise, the forerunner of Nissan, was taken on in 1977 and apart from a break of 3 years with a different manufacturer, Oates is one of Nissan’s longest standing dealers. Since his father Terry’s retirement, Michael has taken on the title of Managing Director and is assisted by his wife Claire, who is Financial Director of the business. Michael and Claire intend to carry the outstanding reputation that Oates Garage has earned itself well into the future, because they have learned the customer is the most important part of the business and they will continue to build their reputation on acknowledging this at all times.
