About Motability

Motability is an independant not-for-profit organisation, which provides mobility solutions for disabled people. We can help you use the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of your Disability Living Allowance (DLA), or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS), to lease or buy a vehicle.

The Schemes

Motability offers three Schemes to help you obtain a vehicle. They are:

  • A three year Contract Hire Scheme for New Vehicles
  • A four, or five year, Hire Purchase Scheme for New Vehicles
  • A two, or three year, Hire Purchase Scheme for Used Vehicles

Most of our customers choose contract hire as they find it's the best option to obtain and pay for a brand new car. They like the convenience of a single, regular payment that includes comprehensive insurance, maintenance and breakdown cover.

Are you eligible?

To qualify for any of the above Motability Schemes, you must be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

1. The Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Allowance.

2. War Pensioners Mobility Supplement.

You should expect to receive the allowance for the full length of the agreement you choose. But don't worry, we welcome applications as long as you have at least 12 month award length remaining when you apply.

What if you can’t drive

You don’t have to be a driver to qualify for one of the Motability Schemes. If you prefer, you can obtain a vehicle as a passenger and propose two other people as the drivers the Contract Hire Scheme.

Children can also qualify for the vehicles as passengers, provided they receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance.

Choosing your vehicle

When choosing your vehicle you first need to define your needs, both now and for the next few years. The vehicle you chose should be suitable for the full length of your agreement.

Adaptations

As everyone's needs are different there are a wide range of adaptations available to overcome the problems of driving with a disability. The most common adaptations include hand-controlled brakes and accelerators, steering wheel knobs, pedal guards, extended switches, raised or rotating seats and wheelchair hoists.

Taxing the vehicle

During your Motability Scheme Contract Hire, or Hire Purchase agreement, you may be eligible for exemption from Vehicle Excise Duty (vehicle tax).
